High above Mittenwald rises the Viererspitze, a landmark of the region. It owes its name to a conspicuous black bar on the north face that resembles a number 4. The southwest ridge to the Viererspitze is usually climbed as a normal route, while the actual normal route serves as a descent.
Shortly before the Mittenwald hut, the trail branches off to the front Kreuzklamm gorge. In this gorge with some short climbing passages, you reach the entrance of the southwest ridge. The steep direct entry can be bypassed and the following pitches offer pleasant climbing in the lower difficulty level II.
